Traditional Eolian apartments in Panarea

Three autonomous apartments comprise the villa, and can be rented separately or as a whole.
The eolian housing style of Panarea reflects an essential and functional life style. The apartment unit is a modular cube that can be added to others horizontally and vertically. The result is a solid building, able to protect from the summer heat, with small openings.
The materials used come from the island itself: molten for the foundations, pumice stone for exterior walls, tufa for the exterior pavements. The modern apartments are built on an horizontal axis, along which the rooms open, becoming terraces; this is surrounded by cylindric pillars, upon which a trellis of cane casts shadow during the day and protects against humidity in the evening. Along the parapet of the terrace, runs a high step that is used as seat (”bisuolo”): this becomes the summer living-room.
The bright paint of the houses (white, yellow, pink and light blue) blends in the colours of the olive trees, prickly pears, agaves, much more arid once upon a time than nowadays that tankers bring water to Panarea letting bouganville and ibiscus grow and rosemary, lemon trees and oranges perfume the garden around the apartments.
